Linguistic and Cultural Challenges for Mental Health Interpreters

Mental health interpreters inevitably face many challenges that exceed those in the general medical field, both in nature and intensity. Critical differences in cultural context and frequently unintelligible babble from the patient, among others, impact the interpreter’s rendition and subsequently affect the diagnosis and/or treatment. This session will dig into some of the peculiarities of mental health interpreting with a focus on practical tips to help interpreters weather the storm.
