Neutral Spanish: Myth or reality?

As professional translators and interpreters, we all have at one time or another been asked by clients to use what was previously called neutral Spanish and is now most commonly referred to as global or international Spanish. However, its existence as a true language variety of Spanish is debatable. What do clients mean by neutral, international or global Spanish? In this session we will analyze examples of global versus not-so-global Spanish from a lexical and syntactical point of view in order to understand the different implications for written and oral texts. We will also review the main characteristics of neutral Spanish as a language variant and learn several strategies that can make our translations and interpretations more aligned with that ideal.
